Located just north of Fresno, the Friant Dam helps deliver water as it runs toward the Merced River. Built in the late 1930s, its waters helped transform the Central Valley into an agricultural powerhouse.
As part of the federal Central Valley Project, the dam captures the upper San Joaquin River’s flow and diverts the water into canals. The dam also releases water to manage floods and meet the water needs of those downstream who have riparian rights to the water. Friant Dam has been controversial due to its environmental impacts.

The Friant-Kern Canal is part of the Friant Dam, which was built between 1939 and 1944 on the upper San Joaquin River, creating Millerton Lake. The Madera Canal also begins at Millerton Lake and travels 36 miles north.
The San Joaquin River provides the water that enables farms up and down the San Joaquin Valley’s eastern side to produce a substantial agricultural bounty. For more than 50 years, the majority of the river has been halted at Friant Dam and diverted north and south for use by farms and homes throughout parts of five counties, in the process making that part of the valley the most productive agricultural region in the world.
