Water Word of the Week: With summer here and outdoor water temperature heating up across California, algal blooms are starting to surface at lakes, including at Lake Powell along the Colorado River. Algal blooms are sudden outbreaks of algae. While only a few types of algae can produce toxins, even nontoxic blooms hurt the environment and local economies by diminishing water quality, harming marine life and impacting tourism. When masses of algae die and decay, they can deplete oxygen in the water to the point of causing devastating fish kills. So, we’re making algal blooms our Water Word of the Week. You can learn more about this and other water-related topics in Aquapedia, our online water encyclopedia.
