Foundation Event October 30, 2019 River Garden Farms Downey Brand Oracle Eastern Municipal Water District Restore Hetch Hetchy California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot to be Keynote Speaker at Water Summit Scripps Scientist Marty Ralph to Discuss Atmospheric Rivers in Opening Keynote at Water Summit

2019 Water Summit
Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot gave keynote lunch talk

The 2019 Water Summit, our annual premier event, was held October 30, 2019 at a new location along the Sacramento River in downtown Sacramento. Now in its 36th year, the Water Summit featured top policymakers and leading stakeholders providing the latest information and viewpoints on issues impacting water across California and the West.

As major deadlines loom in California for the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act and voluntary settlement agreements involving rivers that lead to the Delta, the theme for this year’s summit was Water Year 2020: A Year of Reckoning.

See how the conversation unfolded on Twitter by using the event hashtag #WEFSummit2019

Beyond these regulatory updates, water managers and stakeholders are dealing with a “new normal” as unprecedented episodes of drought, flooding and wildfire challenge the status quo and demand improved approaches. This year’s theme reflected the upcoming transitions, as well as ongoing efforts to improve water management and policy.

Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot

Speakers included:

  • Wade Crowfoot, Secretary, California Natural Resources Agency
  • Karla Nemeth, Director, California Department of Water Resources

At the summit, attendees had the opportunity to network with a variety of stakeholders, including water district managers and board members, state and federal agency officials and regulators, city and county government officials, farmers, environmentalists, attorneys, consultants, engineers, business executives and public interest groups.

A few things attendees enjoyed at the 2019 Water Summit:

  • Learning more about current water issues in California and across the West from key policy-makers, stakeholders and experts
  • A reception overlooking the Sacramento River with time to network with speakers and other attendees
  • Bidding during the silent auction that benefits our Water Leaders program with items such as lunches with key people in the water world, hotel stays and wine baskets, and kayak and rafting trips

Scripps Scientist Marty Ralph to Discuss Atmospheric Rivers in Opening Keynote at Water Summit
Early bird pricing ends today for the 2019 Water Summit “Water Year 2020: A Year of Reckoning"

Oroville Dam spillway emergencyAtmospheric rivers, the narrow bands of moisture that ferry precipitation across the Pacific Ocean to the West Coast, are necessary to keep California’s water reservoirs full.

However, some of them are dangerous because the extreme rainfall and wind can cause catastrophic flooding and damage, much like what happened in 2017 with Oroville Dam’s spillway.

Learn the latest about atmospheric river research and forecasting at our 2019 Water Summit on Oct. 30 in Sacramento, where prominent research meteorologist Marty Ralph will give the opening keynote.
