Water Word of the Week: As we near the end of May – Water Awareness Month in California – we want to post a reminder that conserving water, one of our most precious natural resources, is a year-long exercise. Water conservation has become a way of life throughout the West with a growing recognition that water supply is not unlimited. The California Department of Water Resources offers multiple tips to conserve water, both indoors and outdoors. To mark Water Awareness Month, we’re making Water Conservation our Water Word of the Week. You can learn more about this and other water-related topics in Aquapedia, our online water encyclopedia.
What’s on Tap: The Groundwater Resources Association of California is hosting its annual SGMA Implementation Summit today, May 27, with a new legislative component. The last session in the University of California Groundwater Cooperative Extension Program’s online course on the fundamental principles of groundwater will take place Thursday, May 29. See details on these and other upcoming water meetings on our events calendar.
At the Foundation: We are gearing up for a busy post-summer schedule packed with opportunities to get out and learn. You can join us Sept. 8-12 as we explore the Klamath River where four dams were knocked down, meander along California’s largest river, the Sacramento River, on our Northern California Tour Oct. 22-24, and learn and network at our Oct. 1 Water Summit where we explore issues key to our most critical natural resource in the West. Find more details and registration dates here.
Water Resource of the Week: Our Layperson’s Guide to Water Conservation provides an excellent overview of water conservation in California and the West, explaining how drought, climate change and population growth affect water supplies, and how city residents, businesses and farms are finding ways to use water more efficiently. As we wrap up Water Awareness Month, check out the guide, which covers such topics as how drought and climate change are affecting California and the Colorado River Basin and more.
