Water Word of the Week: The deaths of more than 100 people following torrential rains that recently flooded Central Texas highlighted the effects that extreme weather can also pose in California and other parts of the West. In fact, California’s capital, Sacramento, is considered one of the nation’s most flood-prone cities due to its two major rivers — the Sacramento and the American. So, we’re making flooding and flood management our Water Word of the Week. You can learn more about this and other water-related topics in Aquapedia, our online water encyclopedia.
What’s on Tap: The Delta Protection Commission will hold public workshops July 15 and 17 on the impacts of farmland conversion for habitat and flood control projects. The commission also meets July 17 to discuss the Delta Conveyance Project. The California Water Commission meets July 16 to discuss the State Water Project’s 2025 budget and Water Storage Investment projects. See details on these and other upcoming water meetings on our events calendar.
At the Foundation: The remaining handful of tickets for our first-ever Klamath River Tour are now up for grabs! This special water tour, Sept. 8 through Sept. 12, will not be offered every year, so check out the tour details here. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to examine water issues along the 263-mile Klamath River, from its spring-fed headwaters in south-central Oregon to its redwood-lined estuary on the Pacific Ocean in California. Among the planned stops is the former site of Iron Gate Dam & Reservoir for a firsthand look at restoration efforts. The dam was one of four obsolete structures taken down in the nation’s largest dam removal project. Reserve your spot here while tickets last!
Water Resource of the Week: Can’t make our Klamath River Tour? You can learn the history of the region’s tribal, agricultural and environmental relationships with one of the West’s largest rivers — and the vast watershed that hosts one of the nation’s oldest and biggest reclamation projects — with our Layperson’s Guide to the Klamath River Basin. Learn how dramatic water shortages and massive salmon die-offs led to a landmark agreement to remove four obsolete hydropower dams blocking salmon passage to hundreds of miles of spawning habitat straddling California and Oregon.
