Tickets for Klamath River Tour Now Up for Grabs
The remaining handful of tickets
for our first-ever Klamath River Tour are now up
for grabs! This special water tour, Sept. 8 through Sept.
12, will not be offered every year so check out the tour
details here.
You don’t want to miss this opportunity to examine water issues along the 263-mile Klamath River, from its spring-fed headwaters in south-central Oregon to its redwood-lined estuary on the Pacific Ocean in California.
Among the planned stops is the former site of Iron Gate Dam & Reservoir for a firsthand look at restoration efforts. The dam was one of four obsolete structures taken down in the nation’s largest dam removal project aimed at restoring fish passage. Grab your ticket here while they last!

Western Water Examines How FIRO is Helping Harness the Power of Atmospheric Rivers
For the past 12 years, water
managers in California have been learning how to manage dams more
nimbly in the face of wildly variable weather, and particularly
to meet the challenge of atmospheric rivers.
In the latest Western Water story, our journalism team explores how that effort has led to a new water-management approach, called Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations, or FIRO. By pairing FIRO with accurate forecasts of where those storms will hit and how much rain they’ll bring, dam operators can work in real time to reduce the risk of floods and to capitalize on atmospheric rivers’ water potential.
Since 2019, the concept has been tested on three dams in California. Now, it’s poised to improve operations at 39 more dams across the arid Southwest and dozens more in the U.S. Read the full story here.
