Description: Join us for the Solano Water Institute for Teachers. This three-day, field-trip-based workshop highlights the preservation of Solano County open spaces and the region’s complex water resources, while providing first-hand experiential learning that teachers can share with their students for continued exploration.
This place-based learning experience will provide teachers with the tools to support students in learning about local watersheds and their function, and to support development of environmental literacy about the places where students live and recreate.
Professional development curriculum for the Solano Institute includes Project WET, providing innovative, locally relevant water education training for K-12 teachers and emphasizes the use of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and California’s Environmental Education Principles and Concepts.
The institute will be held from July 29-31 followed by a Saturday reporting day on October 17.
Highlights of the institute include:
- Touring select Solano County open spaces such as Rush Ranch, Lake Solano and Dunnell Nature Center
- Experiencing the interconnected complexity of Solano County’s open spaces and water resources
- Receiving a Project WET curriculum guide and engaging in innovative, locally relevant water education activities framed around NGSS
- Kayaking on Lake Solano and a bus tour to the Monticello Dam with local water experts
- Feasting on local artisan fare for snacks and lunches
- Receiving a $120 per day stipend that will be paid upon conclusion of the institute, including completion of a curriculum integration project
- Having an opportunity to purchase 2 units of credit through CSU Chico
The $50 registration fee includes all materials, breakfast and lunch each day. The fee is refunded upon completion of the full event. Space is limited to 30 participants.
