Listen: Klamath Dam removal project
The Klamath River runs more than 250 miles from Southern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean in Northern California, and is currently undergoing the largest dam removal project in U.S. history. Mark Bransom, Chief Executive Officer of the Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC), explains why his organization is leading this river restoration project, decades in the making. KRRC’s governance is composed of 15 members who are appointed by the governors of Oregon and California, in addition to appointees from the Yurok and Karuk tribes, conservation groups, as well as fisheries. The Klamath River dam removal project was largely driven by tribes who long called this land home before modern water infrastructure. Sami Jo Difuntorum, the Culture Preservation Officer with Shasta Indian Nation, shares how her tribe has endured and suffered on this land through the decades.
