Description: The California Environmental Education Foundation invites educators who teach students in grades 4 -12 at schools in Los Angeles County, to participate in an engaging three-Saturday Teacher Institute utilizing investigation-focused pedagogy to maximize collaborative learning in environmental education and place-based stewardship. Institute enrollment preference will be given to middle and high school educators teaching within the city of Los Angeles.
• Participate in high-quality environmental education (EE) activities that are correlated to NGSS and Common Core Standards, using nationally acclaimed, research-based EE programs: Project WILD, Project Learning Tree and Project WET.
• Experience best practices in learner-centered pedagogy and NGSS science practices taught by a veteran Regional Director from WestEd’s highly respected K-12 Alliance.
• Learn best practices in environmental stewardship from experts at Roots and Shoots, Metropolitan Water District and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
• Receive up-to-date information from scientists on environmental “hot” topics such as water quality, energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation, global climate change and STEM. Learn about and use a new learning and teaching platform SKIES, skieslearn.com developed by Caltech professors and supported by their K-12 outreach programs at Caltech, Community Science Academy, and Caltech Classroom Connection.
• Receive professional follow-up help throughout the Institute from your regional CREEC Network Coordinator to identify high quality EE resources and to provide coaching on your class environmental stewardship project.
• Complimentary lunches, snacks and refreshments are provided.
• Eligible for three (3) Continuing Education Units available through UC Davis.
• Collect a $600 stipend mailed to you after completing “Stipend Conditions” identified on your Application.
• Learn about funding sources for EE and how to apply for a $200 mini-grant from the Roots and Shoots Program to implement your stewardship project.
