Weekend Wrap-Up: Washington; Infrastructure
Welcome back! Here’s the weekend wrap-up:
At the top of the scroll: A California-related roundup of news stories from the nation’s capital included “Landmark California Regulations Under Federal Fire” and “Internal EPA Report Highlights Disputes Over Fracking and Well Water” in the Los Angeles Times; “Sensible Waste Storage Needed” by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein in The Sacramento Bee; “After Delayed Vote, EPA Gains a Tough Leader to Tackle Climate Change” in the New York Times; and “Hydraulic Fracturing and Water Issues Discussed in House Subcommittee Hearing” by the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Washington, D.C., office.
“Gore to Deliver Keynote Speech at Tahoe Summit,” the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported. According to an article excerpt, “[Former Vice President Al] Gore will deliver the keynote speech at the 17th annual Lake Tahoe Summit, scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Sand Harbor State Park … U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., will host this year’s summit.”
Infrastructure was a weekend news topic too, including a column written by Dan Walters titled “Bay Bridge Harbinger of Future?” that referenced train and water projects. The Orange County Register reported, “O.C. Water OKs Confidential Poseidon Deal” and the San Francisco Chronicle reported, “San Francisco Water Retrofit Includes First Under-Bay Tunnel.” The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation released a video, “Linking a Generation to Grand Coulee Dam.”
Also, a U.S. Geological Survey report, “Pesticide Accumulation in Sierra Nevada Frogs,” was released; the Water Education Foundation’s summer 2013 River Report, “Finding a Solution for the Salton Sea,” is now available; and look at newsstands for the August issue of Sunset magazine with a feature article about the Los Angeles River titled “L.A. Confluential.”
