Safe Yield: Aquafornia Water Word of the Week
Aquafornia’s Water Word of the Week from sister site Aquapedia is Safe Yield, a water term related to groundwater and subsidence — subjects that have made headlines recently.
According to an excerpt from Aquapedia’s definition, “Landowners in California are entitled to pump and use a reasonable amount of groundwater from a basin underlying their land. When there is insufficient water to meet demand, property owners are expected to extract the safe yield — the rate at which groundwater can be withdrawn without causing long-term decline of water levels.” To read the full definition, go to Aquapedia, the Water Education Foundation’s free online water encyclopedia.
The entry’s contents also include a section titled Safe Yield Adjudication.
Beef up your knowledge of safe yield by delving into the additional resources cited on Aquapedia. To name several, there are the Foundation’s “Layperson’s Guide to Groundwater” and “An Expanded Role for Groundwater Storage, Western Water, Sept/Oct 2007,” along with “Sustainability from the Ground Up: Groundwater Management in California,” from the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA).
