Invasive Species: Aquafornia Water Word of the Week
Make it your New Year’s resolution to read Aquafornia’s Water Word of the Week from sister site Aquapedia, the Water Education Foundation’s free interactive online water encyclopedia.
Invasive Species, this week’s Aquafornia’s Water Word of the Week, is included among Aquapedia’s more than 200 definitions of water terms from A to Z.
According to Aquapedia, “Invasive species, also known as exotics, are plants, animals, insects, and aquatic species introduced into non-native habitats. … Invasive species also put water conveyance systems at risk. Water pumps and other infrastructure can potentially shut down due to large numbers of invasive species.” Also included in the contents is a section specific to invasive species in California.
To do more than just scratch the surface on the subject of invasive species, Aquapedia lists Foundation and other resources that are available. Among Foundation offerings are the following: “Two States, One Lake: Keeping Lake Tahoe Blue, Western Water, Sept./Oct. 2013,” “Making the Connection: Sound Science and Good Policy in the Delta, Western Water, July/Aug. 2011,” posters, including “Unwelcome Visitors” and “Space Invaders” (non-native plants), and an “Unwelcome Visitors” slide card.
